Operation College Bound is a Joplin Schools initiative to introduce elementary school children to the possibility of college. The pilot program, made possible by a grant from Bright Futures Joplin, launched in September 2012 at Columbia Elementary School.
Our Mission: Every student, kindergarten through 5th grade, will visit a different college or university campus every spring. The visits include tours of the campus, classrooms, dorms, and athletic facilities. Students will meet college students and staff – even the mascot!
In addition to annual school visits, the Operation College Bound program includes activities and events throughout the year. For example, students will perform online research before each trip. They will participate in writing activities about their visits. They will also study the history of the schools and learn about the process for applying for college and more.
Our Vision: To make college or post-secondary career training a reality for every student.
For many students, college is a faraway dream. For some, it isn’t even a thought. By introducing students early to college life and the endless opportunities that a college education or post-secondary career training can offer, that faraway dream becomes real and possible.
Our Partners: Operation College Bound has partnered with several area colleges and universities for the college tours:
Kindergarten: Crowder College, Neosho MO
1st Grade: Missouri Southern State University, Joplin MO
2nd Grade: Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, Miami OK
3rd Grade: Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg KS
4th Grade: Missouri State University, Springfield MO
5th Grade: University of Arkansas, Fayetteville AR
