District's 2007 MAP Results Announced
Students in the Joplin School District showed strength on Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests for yet another year. Released last week by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Joplin's elementary, middle, and high school MAP results all ranked above state averages in communication arts, as did elementary and high school mathematics.
"We are very proud that Joplin's MAP results continue to build each year," said Superintendent Dr. Jim Simpson. "While there are a few weak areas that we will continue to focus on improving, we are pleased with the strong upward trends we see in Joplin's overall student performance."
Last spring, all Joplin students in grades 3-8 took MAP tests in communication arts and mathematics. The communication arts exam was also given to 11th grade students, and 10th graders took the mathematics exam. Results on MAP exams are used to evaluate school districts for accreditation and to satisfy federal accountability requirements (No Child Left Behind).

Dr. Jim Simpson, Superintendent of Joplin Schools,
discusses Joplin's 2007 MAP results during
a press conference held at Royal Heights Elementary
on August 17, 2007.
Student performance on MAP exams is categorized into four achievement levels: Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. With a goal of moving students out of the lower categories, many Joplin schools continue to deliver impressive percentages of students scoring in the upper two categories.
"Joplin students are excelling beyond their peers in the state," said Angie Besendorfer, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning, and Accountability. "For instance, in five of our elementary schools, the percentage of third graders scoring at the Proficient and Advanced levels was at least 30% above state average in both math and communication arts."
