After-School Programs for 2008-2009

Listed below are some local after-school programs available to Joplin students.


"School Plus" Program
Provided by the Joplin Family Y

This state-licensed program provides a nutritious snack, organized indoor/outdoor activities, and homework assistance while incorporating the CORE Values of the Y: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. The program is offered at the following elementary schools:

  • Cecil Floyd Elementary School
  • Columbia Elementary School
  • Duquesne Elementary School
  • Eastmorland Elementary School
  • Irving Elementary School
  • Jefferson Elementary School
  • Kelsey Norman Elementary School
  • Royal Heights Elementary School
  • Stapleton Elementary School

All directors and staff are CPR/First-Aid certified and trained through the YMCA of the USA childcare standards. A fee is required for the program, and financial assistance is available based on availability and need. For more information about School Plus, please contact:

"Recreation Station" Program
Provided by the Joplin Parks and Recreation Department

This on-site after-school program provides a place for children to play and to work on their homework after school until 5:30 pm. The Recreation Station staff provide a fun environment where the children play games, make crafts, and complete their homework. Recreation Station is available at the following schools:

  • Emerson Elementary School
  • McKinley Elementary School
  • West Central Elementary School

There is a monthly fee for the program, however a discount is available for families with more than one child enrolled. Scholarships are also available for those who qualify. For more information about Recreation Station, please contact:

Boys and Girls Club of Joplin

The Boys and Girls Club provides an after-school program for children 5-18 years old. Trained staff members help children develop their academic and social skills in a fun and diverse environment. Activities are designed for various age groups and skill levels to enhance growth and to encourage learning.

The program is available to all area residents, and after-school transportation to the Boys and Girls Club is provided from several Joplin schools. A small fee is required for the program. For more information about the Boys and Girls Club of Joplin, please contact:
