FTC Guidance Counselor Kevin Keys has been named the Missouri Secondary Counselor of the Year by the Missouri School Counselor Association.
Providing career guidance services for 800 students, Keys successfully juggles a multitude of responsibilities. He oversees the activities of the Career Center, coordinates college and university visits, assists with financial aid and scholarship applications, visits area schools, and performs a plethora of additional duties.
During his six years at FTC, Keys has had a significant impact upon the school and its students. When a trend of dropping enrollment emerged, he actively began a new recruitment plan that included visits to area schools. Enrollment increased, and Keys began to modify the FTC student selection process. Now, students who apply to Franklin Technology Center are interviewed prior to placement and are chosen based upon attitude, attendance, grade point average, and the number of credits completed. The result? Post-graduation student placement has improved.
Dubbed by FTC staff members as "Super Keys," Mr. Keys appears to have boundless energy and expertise. Dave Rockers, Director of Franklin Technology Center, states that Keys is the "rock" for students and staff. He makes it a point to know every student and goes the extra mile to encourage and motivate students to succeed.
He is also actively involved in several community organizations, including a local organization providing services to the developmentally disabled, Special Olympics, TREK, and many other community service organizations.
Students and colleagues agree – Mr. Keys exemplifies the role of secondary school counselor and is a true professional.
