The Process

If you're going to get to word out about bullying, you're going to have to learn about it first. Then you can put together your presentation. Before you jump in, take a moment to look at the PLANNING GUIDE to help organize what you need to do in order to get everything done.

STEP ONE - Choose a role.
To begin, you need to find two friends who'll help you with this project. Your teacher can help you with this. Once you've found your partners, you should divide to look at the problem of bullying from the perspective of the three types of people involved, so each of you should choose one of the following roles:
The Bully - someone who picks on people or causes problems for another person
The Victim - the person who is getting bothered or picked on
The Witness - the person (or people) who see someone picking on another person but who isn't directly involved.

STEP TWO - Conduct research.
Now that everyone has a specific role, each of you are going to learn about what bullying is and how it affects these three types of people. Use the links and resources described here to help you.

The Bully

The Victim

The Witness

STEP THREE - Report to group.
After you and your friends complete your research, you should share what you learned with each other. Think about what your partner's have to say and what that has to do with what you know from your research. What information sounds like it is important for the public to know if they are going to identify and stop bullying? It may be a good idea to highlight things in your notes or recopy what you think is the most important information from each group member onto one sheet of paper.

STEP FOUR - Choose your audience.
You and your partners are going to put together a public service announcement for the Internet that everyone can see. But you should decide first which type of person you want to target your message toward. Do you want to send a message to bullies? What about a message for the victims? Or how about something to encourage the witnesses? Decide as a group which audience you wish to target in your announcement.

STEP FIVE - Prepare your presentation announcement.
After you have listened to one another and have decided what you need to share, it's time to plan for your presentation. Think about the public service announcements you may have seen that explain a problem to the community and then give them advice about how to deal with that problem all in a minute. That's the kind of presentation you're going to make. You'll need to both inform the public about what you know and what the problem is as well as give them clues about how to deal with the problem. Keep in mind the audience you chose and what specific things this group might need to know. To help you plan your presentation, complete the PRESENTATION PLANNER (opens in Microsoft Word).

STEP SIX - Create your podcast public service announcement.
Your group now had their plan together, making the final podcast will be easy. Using GarageBand (Mac machines only), put together your podcast. Check out the GARAGEBAND HOW TO (opens in Microsoft Word) if you need help with GarageBand.
